Welcome!
Introduction
The welcome of baptism is for all God’s children. This baptismal gift sets us free from the power of sin and death. In today’s gospel, Christ promises that the disciple who gives a cup of cold water to the little ones serves Christ himself. From worship we are sent on our baptismal mission: to serve the little ones of this world and to be a sign of God’s merciful welcome.
(please stand for our opening song)
Hymn: Baptized in Water ELW 456

C: Amen.

The Baptism of Elizabeth Lynn Weaver
P: I ask Amy, Brian, Cheryl and Gregg to come forward and join me at the Baptistry with daughter, Elizabeth Lynn Weaver.
P: In Holy Baptism, our gracious heavenly Father liberates us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the Church, the Body of Christ. Living in Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.
P: Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have your child baptized into Christ?
R: (Parents: Amy and Brian) I do.
P: Amy and Brian, Cheryl and Gregg, as you bring Elizabeth Lynn to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities:
To live with her among God’s faithful people,
Bring her to the Word or God and the holy supper,
Teach her the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments,
Place into her hands the holy scriptures,
And nurture her in faith and prayer,
So that Elizabeth may learn to trust God,
Proclaim Christ through Word and deed,
Care for others and the world God made,
And work for justice and peace.
P: Parents and God Parents, Do you promise to help Elizabeth Lynn grow in the Christian faith and life?
R: (Amy and Brian, and Cheryl and Gregg) I do.
The Congregation Stands:
P: People of God, do you promise to support Elizabeth Lynn and pray for her new life in Christ?
C: We do.
P: I ask you to profess your faith in Jesus Christ, reject sin, and confess the faith of the Church.
P: Do you renounce the devil, and all the forces that defy God?
C: I renounce them.
P: Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God?
C: I renounce them.
P: Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?
C: I renounce them.
P: Do you believe in God the Father.
C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth.
P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
C: I believe in Jesus Chrst, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and was born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day, he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
C: We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning Your Spirit moved over the waters and by Your word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood, you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led Your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river Your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus’ death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live with you.
Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of Your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of Baptism may be given new life. To You be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the Unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.
C: Amen
(Congregation sits. Amy and Brian, hold Elizabeth and place her head above the baptismal font)
P: Elizabeth Lynn, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
C: You belong to Christ, in whom you have been baptized. Alleluia!
(Cheryl will place the white garment over Elizabeth.)
P: As you have been baptized into His body, we clothe you in this white garment to signify being washed in the blood of the Lamb, who takes away our sin. We are made a new creation in Christ. Elizabeth, you have been clothed in Christ.
P: Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give all your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life.
(Pastor will now ask to hold Elizabeth. We will bless her forehead with Chrism Oil.)
P: Sustain Elizabeth Lynn with the gift of the Holy Spirit
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might
The Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord,
The Spirit of joy in your presence,
Both now and forever.
C: Amen
P: Elizabeth Lynn, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the Cross of Christ forever.
(At this time we invite the godfather (Gregg) to light the baptismal candle from the Paschal Candle, by the font, and hold the candle near Elizabeth as we continue.)
P: Elizabeth Lynn, let your light shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.
P: Let us together welcome our newly baptized sister, Elizabeth.
C: We Welcome you into the Body of Christ and into the mission we share; join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God’s creative and redeeming Word to all the World.
Prayer of the Day
O God, you direct our lives by your grace, and your words of justice and mercy reshape the world. Mold us into a people who welcome your word and serve one another, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.

First Reading: Jeremiah 28:5-9
Through a symbolic action Jeremiah insisted that Judah and all the surrounding nations should submit to the king of Babylon (Jer. 27). Hananiah contradicted the word of Jeremiah, who in reply insisted that Hananiah’s rosy prediction should not be believed until it came true. God confirmed the word of Jeremiah and sentenced the false prophet Hananiah to death (vv. 16-17).
R: 5 The prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord, 6 and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfill the words that you have prophesied and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord and all the exiles. 7 But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8 The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. 9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”

C: Thanks be to God
Psalmody: Psalm 89:1-4, 15-18
Your love, O Lord, forever will I sing. (Ps. 89:1)
1 Your love, O Lord, forever will I sing; from age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness.
2 For I am persuaded that your steadfast love is established forever; you have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens.
3 “I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn an oath to David my servant:
4 ‘I will establish your line forever, and preserve your throne for all generations.’ ”
15 Happy are the people who know the festal shout! They walk, O Lord, in the light of your presence.
16 They rejoice daily in your name; they are jubilant in your righteousness.
17 For you are the glory of their strength, and by your favor our might is exalted.
18 Truly, our shield belongs to the Lord; our king to the Holy One of Israel.
Second Reading: Romans 6:12-23
Sin is an enslaving power which motivates us to live self-serving, disobedient lives. Sin’s final payoff is death. We, however, have been set free from sin’s slavery to live obediently under God’s grace, whose end is the free gift of eternal life.
12 Do not let sin reign in your mortal bodies, so that you obey their desires. 13 No longer present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
15 What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that, if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that you who were slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted 18 and that you, having been set free from sin, have become enslaved to righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms because of your limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and lawlessness, leading to even more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, leading to sanctification.
20 When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 So what fruit did you then gain from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the fruit you have leads to sanctification, and the end is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

C: Thanks be to God
Gospel: Matthew 10:40-42

When Jesus sends his disciples out as missionaries, he warns them of persecution and hardships they will face. He also promises to reward any who aid his followers and support their ministry.
R: [Jesus said to the twelve:] 40 “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous, 42 and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”

Hymn: Just As I Am, without One Plea ELW 592, vs. 1 & 3

Communion
P: Loving God, we offer at your table the gifts of our hearts. Help us take heart in you and share freely of your love, so that all creation can taste your abundance. We ask this in the name of Jesus, through the Spirit abiding with us now and forever.
C: Amen.
P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God. You reveal your glory as the glory of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: equal in majesty, undivided in splendor, one Lord, one God, ever to be adored in your eternal glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
P: Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
P: For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
C: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.
P: To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy church, now and forever.
C: Amen.
P: Let us pray as Jesus taught us:
C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
